Spinning (mini-review)

Finished Spinning by Tillie Walden.

Tillie has been figure skating her whole life—practices and competitions don’t leave room for anything else. When she starts high school, though, she wonders if she wants to keep going. She has other interests (ok, art and girls) and suddenly, there’s more to her life than just ice skating.

This is a gorgeous graphic novel. It’s impossible not to identify with Tillie, especially as you can start to see her life getting bigger. The format reflects this; the panels start to get bigger as a matter of course and there are more full-page drawings.

This is such a good book, even for people who are unsure of graphic novels.
