Finished It’s Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vezzini.
Craig suffers from depression and one night, he decides to kill himself. Instead, he calls the suicide hotline. They encourage him to go to the hospital; when he does, he accidentally agrees to be committed and stay for at least five days. (Thanks to construction, he’s in the adult ward.) It’s initially a horrifying thought: five days with actual crazy people?! It ends up saving him.
I don’t know how to discuss this without mentioning that it’s at least semi-autobiographical. Ned Vezzini also spent five days in an adult mental ward. And I also don’t know how to ignore the fact that he committed suicide a few years ago.
That is heartbreaking but he left behind this book, which has been a lifeline to so many people. (Especially the last few lines, when Craig encourages, demands, challenges himself to live.)
This is a stellar book. I’m glad I finally read it.
