Interviewing Susan Dennard

Susan Dennard was nice enough to stop by and discuss Truthwitch (out January 5).

What would your witchery be?  (You could also say what Veronica Mars’ witchery would be–although I guess she would also be a Truthwitch.  So never mind.)

I would totally be a Waterwitch! I don’t know if I became a marine biologist because I love water or if I love water because of the marine biology, but MAN! Being able to control water would be amazing! :D

What was the inspiration behind Truthwitch?

Truthwitch came out about from a number of ideas all colliding at once. I’ve always wanted to write a book set in a fantasy version of Croatia/Dubrovnik, but in the winter of 2013, this word came to me as I was falling asleep: “Threadwitch.” I poked and prodded that idea and started to realize the Threadwitch had a best friend — a Truthwtich — and what if their friendship literally saved the world? Then, I heard the Two Steps from Hell piece “El Dorado” and suddenly, bam! I could just see this story unfolding in my fantasy version of Croatia. ;) The story went from there!

Can you share the first sentence/paragraph?

“Everything had gone horribly wrong.
None of Safiya fon Hasstrel’s hastily laid plans for this holdup were going as they ought.”

What 2016 releases are you most excited for?

I’m REALLY excited for Alexandra Bracken’s Passenger. I got to read a snippet of it, and WOW. It looks amazing. :)

Thanks, Susan!
