BACKSTORY: A conversation with my best friend John resulted in the creation of The Kelly Hager Movie Hall of Fame. The first two movies chosen were The Godfather and Heathers.
CRITERIA: Each month, two movies will be chosen. One will be a classic and the other will be contemporary (read: within my lifetime). The contemporary movie will be at least 10 years old, as that way, the movie will have proven staying power.
THE NEW PICKS:
Casablanca. I think this is one of those movies that’s absolutely perfect. The funny thing with this movie is that so much of it has seeped into pop culture that the first time you see it, it’s almost enough to cause deja vu. It’s like, “So THAT’S where that comes from!” over and over and over again. Plus, like I said: perfect.
The Princess Bride. I think this is one of those movies that everyone loves, but it’s also rare in that no matter how many times you’ve seen it, it holds up. Whether it’s your first or hundredth time seeing it, it’s still smart and funny and sweet and perfect. And incredibly quotable. (Which isn’t mandatory for good movies but certainly doesn’t hurt.)
