It Happened One Night won Best Picture and is on a ton of the AFI’s Best lists (100 Years, 100 Movies; 100 Years, 100 Passions; 100 Years, 100 Laughs and it’s one of the 10 best romantic comedies).
Ellie (Claudette Colbert) is currently on the run. Her dad disapproves of her new husband (a man with the world’s most ridiculous name: King Westley) and so he had her kidnapped. She escaped and is trying to make her way back to New York and King Westley. Almost immediately, she meets Peter (Clark Gable). He agrees to help her, but there’s a catch: he’s a reporter and he wants to write the story.
It shouldn’t be considered a spoiler if I point out that they end up falling in love.
This is an incredibly good movie (no surprise, really, given that it’s on so many lists) and it’s also very funny. I’d seen this before (in a college Journalism & Film course) but it was much better than I remember it being. (And I remembered really enjoying it.)
