The Way We Were

The Way We Were is one of the AFI’s 100 Years, 100 Passions list.  It’s also one of my favorite movies, probably somewhere in my top 10.

Part of it, of course, is that I adore bittersweet love stories.  The love that cannot be? Yes, please.  But more of it is that I love Katie (as played by Barbra Streisand so much).  Everyone talks about the end (which does always, ALWAYS make me cry) but the part that I always think of first is when Hubbell (Robert Redford) tells Katie that her problem is that she doesn’t realize that people should come before principles, and she says, “People ARE their principles!”

It’s the most true statement ever.  And it’s a wonderful movie.
