Shift

Finished Shift by Jeri Smith-Ready. This is the second book in the Shade trilogy; this review assumes you’ve read the first book (Shade).

Summary from Goodreads: “Aura’s life is anything but easy. Her boyfriend, Logan, died, and his slides between ghost and shade have left her reeling. Aura knows he needs her now more than ever. She loves Logan, but she can’t deny her connection with the totally supportive, totally gorgeous Zachary. And she’s not sure that she wants to.

Logan and Zachary will fight to be the one by her side, but Aura needs them both to uncover the mystery of her past—the mystery of the Shift.

As Aura’s search uncovers new truths, she must decide whom to trust with her secrets…and her heart.”

Me again. I loved Shade and I don’t know why it took me so long to read Shift. (But I can’t be too upset about it, because now I get to read the third and final book, Shine, right away. So I guess procrastination isn’t always a bad thing.)

I am completely Team Zachary. I understand how Aura is torn (it’s hard to get over your first love) but Zachary is so awesome. And he’s Scottish!

I’m also really enjoying this series. The mythology is fantastic and I can’t wait to learn more. (As backstory, the Shift is when everyone younger than 18 can see ghosts. Aura was the first child born after the Shift; Zachary was the last child born pre-Shift.) We’re starting to get some answers and I’m sure it will all be perfectly clear once I read Shine.

Also, the book is set in Baltimore (Aura lives in my friend Josh’s neighborhood; they go shopping in my neighborhood) and it’s so fun to see places I know make cameos in books.

And finally, the end of this book is absolutely perfect.

This series is highly recommended (even if you’re getting sick of paranormal YA).
