Welcome to the latest installment of Things I’m Obsessed With!
Books:
I have fallen so in love with Netgalley. If you’re a book blogger, it’s such a great thing. It also helps that titles go to my Kindle and I can read from my Kindle on my iPhone, so it makes reading and reviewing so much easier. Plus, you can get great books much earlier than normal. (I’m about to read the new Cat Patrick or the new Julie Kagawa. Or the new Chris Bohjalian. Decisions, decisions!)
Movies:
I recently did my first Oscar Redux, where I rewatch all five Best Picture nominees for a given year and say what I think should have won. As much as I love talking about books, I think Oscar discussions are my greatest joy in life. And this is my way to keep it going even past Oscar season. I’m not sure how often I’ll get to do the Oscar Redux (I only have all the movies for a few years) but I hope to do it every few months. And maybe buy more movies. (Or take full advantage of TCM’s Oscar Month next year!)
TV:
The downside of Netgalley (and, to a much lesser extent, the Oscar/AFI project) is that I feel like TV time should take up much less of my time than it does. So I’m trying to be very mindful of what I watch and, if I don’t absolutely love it, I need to stop watching it. Shows currently axed from my DVR? The Good Wife and Glee. When Glee is at its best, it’s better than pretty much everything else. But Glee is rarely at its best. It’s straining my ability to suspend disbelief. (And you guys, my ability to suspend disbelief should be legendary. I will go with ANYTHING.) For example, would Rachel really want to marry Finn? Finn has no ambition whatsoever and, as I pointed out on Twitter, Rachel has the potential to make Barbra Streisand look lazy. And also, really? Quinn could go to Yale? No way. NO WAY. On the plus side, if Quinn can get into Yale, I see no reason why Finn can’t get into NYU, which means that Rachel’s move to NYC may be back on. Yay!
So what are you obsessed with this week?
Films noir. They match my depression. Also, I really liked “Almost Perfect.”
I just saw your post on Double Indemnity. I LOVE that movie. :)
I know what you mean about The Good Wife too. It has gotten so blah. I might finish up the last few eps in May when everything else has gone off. Such a bummer because it is a fantastic cast.
I could never get in to Glee. I just enjoy the music from time to time,
I was SO in love with Glee. I watched the first season in about a week, I think (the last nine episodes over my weekend) and over BEA last year, I made sure to watch the finale. And this season, it’s just totally fallen apart. It was never a consistent show but it seems like this year, the writers have totally stopped caring about things like good storytelling or plot consistencies.
Last night, Rachel told Finn she didn’t have to go to New York and she’d rather be with him. For most of the show, she’s wanted to go to NY even more than I do, and that’s saying something.
